Toys and Squishies: Please encourage your students to keep squishies, stuffed items, and toys at home. These items can become distractions in the classroom and interfere with learning. If an item becomes disruptive or a distraction, the teacher may take it up.
Taking Pride in Our Campus: Please remind your students to clean up after themselves and take pride in our school—whether they are in the cafeteria, classroom, locker room, or walking across campus. It takes all of us working together to care for our facilities and keep SOUTH looking its best!
Making Good Choices: We all have a responsibility to work toward being our best selves every day. Middle school is an important time for students to learn that their decisions have consequences. Please talk with your students about thinking before they act, especially when emotions are high. Getting into an altercation, making a threat, or engaging in inappropriate behavior can have serious and lasting consequences, including possible involvement with law enforcement. One poor decision can impact much more than a moment—it can affect opportunities, relationships, and their future. Please encourage your students to pause, think, walk away, and make choices they can be proud of.
Absences and Schoolwork: We have had several families reach out asking about virtual school options or schoolwork to complete while missing school for vacations or other trips. Please remember that BMSS is not a virtual school, and students need to be present in the classroom whenever possible. Students should check their Google Classrooms for assignments and updates. If they have questions or need additional support, they can connect with their teachers when they return.
Student Pick-Up and Campus Safety: We are seeing an increase in students attempting to walk across campus to meet parents in other parking areas, as well as parents walking up toward the bus area. For the safety of all students, please pick up your children in the designated front pick-up area only. This is the only pick-up location that is monitored by staff and designed for parent pick-up.
The other areas of campus are bus loops used by special education buses, general education buses, and Life Skills parent pick-up. The Kendall parking lots are not designated parent pick-up areas and have significant traffic, including vehicles that do not always stop appropriately at stop signs.
Please do not encourage students to walk around building corners or across campus to meet you in another location. If you would prefer to avoid the longer line, simply arrive at the front loop around 4:15–4:20 p.m., when traffic typically moves much more quickly. Our goal is simple: keep every student safe.
